Product Dimensions:
Product Description
The NI 9401 is one of the most popular and versatile digital I/O modules in the National Instruments C Series family. It is a high-speed, bidirectional digital I/O module designed for use with CompactDAQ or CompactRIO systems.

Key Product Advantages
-
High-Speed Performance: With a 100 ns response time, it is ideal for high-speed timing, triggering, and communication protocols.
-
Flexible Configuration: The 8 channels are grouped into two 4-channel banks. You can configure each bank independently as either input or output (e.g., 4 in/4 out, 8 in, or 8 out).
-
Protocol Support: When used with a CompactRIO FPGA, the NI 9401 can be used to implement custom digital protocols such as SPI, I2C, PWM, or Quadrature Encoder reading.
-
Standard TTL Compatibility: Uses industry-standard 5V TTL levels, making it compatible with a vast array of sensors, switches, and industrial ICs.
-
Hot-Swappable: Like all C Series modules, it can be installed or removed from a chassis without powering down the system.
Product Applications
-
Encoder Interfacing: Reading high-speed signals from incremental quadrature encoders for motor position feedback.
-
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM): Generating high-frequency PWM signals for controlling LED brightness, small DC motors, or heating elements.
-
Digital Communication: Implementing custom serial interfaces (SPI/UART) to talk to peripheral chips or sensors.
-
Event Counting: High-speed counting of pulses from flow meters or optical tachometers.
-
High-Speed Triggering: Sending or receiving synchronization triggers between multiple instruments in a test system.
Important Usage Notes (Precautions)
-
Bank Configuration: Remember that you cannot set individual channels as In/Out. You must set them in banks of four (Channels 0-3 and Channels 4-7).
-
Current Limits: The module is designed for signal-level logic, not for driving high-power loads. It provides only 2 mA per channel. To drive relays or motors, you must use an external driver or buffer.
-
Cabling: Because the NI 9401 operates at high frequencies (10 MHz), use high-quality, shielded D-SUB cables to prevent signal crosstalk and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
-
Voltage Tolerance: While it is a 5V module, ensure that inputs do not exceed 5.25 V, as higher voltages can damage the internal circuitry.
Required Hardware/Software
-
Chassis: Works in any NI CompactDAQ or CompactRIO chassis.
-
Driver: Requires NI-DAQmx (for CompactDAQ) or NI-RIO (for CompactRIO).
-
Connectors: Usually paired with a NI 9934 (25-pin D-SUB to screw terminal) accessory for easy wiring.
