Product Description
The Allied Telesyn (now Allied Telesis) AT-RH505BE is a legacy industrial-grade micro-hub. It is a 5-port 10Base-T Ethernet Hub featuring an additional BNC (10Base2) port. This device was designed to provide a compact and reliable solution for small workgroups or for bridging twisted-pair networks with coaxial-based “Thinnet” segments.
Product Parameters
| Feature | Specification |
| Port Count | 5x RJ45 ports + 1x BNC (Thinnet) port |
| Standard | IEEE 802.3 10Base-T (Twisted Pair), 10Base2 (Coaxial) |
| Data Rate | 10 Mbps (Half-Duplex) |
| Cabling Type | RJ45: Cat3, 4, or 5 UTP; BNC: RG-58 Coaxial (50 Ohm) |
| Max Distance | RJ45: 100m; BNC: 185m per segment |
| Status LEDs | Power, Link/Activity (per port), Collision, BNC Activity |
| Power Supply | External AC/DC Power Adapter (typically 7.5V – 12V DC) |
| Chassis | Compact, rugged metal housing |
Key Product Advantages
-
Media Conversion (Bridge Capability): It functions as a gateway between modern (at the time) RJ45 star topologies and older BNC daisy-chain topologies.
-
Plug-and-Play Simplicity: As a “dumb” hub (unmanaged), it requires no software configuration. It broadcasts incoming data to all ports automatically.
-
Compact “Micro” Form Factor: Its small footprint makes it ideal for installation in tight spaces, such as desktop environments or small wiring closets.
-
Diagnostic LEDs: Provides instant visual feedback on network health, specifically showing “Collision” status, which is vital for troubleshooting older half-duplex networks.
-
Allied Telesyn Reliability: Known for high MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), these units were built to last in industrial and commercial environments.
Product Applications
-
Legacy Systems Maintenance: Connecting older industrial machines (like CNCs or older PLCs) that only have BNC interfaces to a more modern RJ45 network.
-
Small Workgroup Hub: Creating a localized 10 Mbps network for a small cluster of devices.
-
Field Service/Troubleshooting: Used by network technicians to tap into legacy coaxial segments for diagnostic purposes.
-
Educational/Lab Use: Demonstrating older networking topologies and collision domains in academic settings.
Important Usage Notes (Precautions)
-
BNC Termination: If the BNC port is used, the coaxial segment must be terminated with 50-ohm resistors at both ends. Failure to do so will cause signal reflection and crash the network.
-
Half-Duplex Only: Unlike modern switches, this is a hub. Only one device can transmit at a time. High traffic volume will lead to increased collisions and reduced performance.
-
Speed Constraint: This device is limited to 10 Mbps. It will not support 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) or 1000 Mbps (Gigabit) speeds. Connecting it to a modern high-speed switch may require manual port configuration on the switch side to lock the speed at 10 Mbps.
-
Daisy Chaining: Follow the “5-4-3 rule” for 10 Mbps Ethernet (maximum 5 segments, 4 hubs, 3 populated segments) to avoid timing issues (late collisions).
Port Configuration Tip
The AT-RH505BE often includes an “Uplink” or “MDI/MDI-X” switch (or a dedicated port) to allow connection to another hub without needing a crossover cable. Ensure this switch is in the correct position depending on whether you are connecting a PC (Workstation) or another Hub/Switch.
