Product Description
The CO20G/F is an explosion-proof, infrared gas transmitter designed to detect Carbon Dioxide concentrations. The “G” typically denotes a General Purpose/Industrial housing, and the “F” often refers to Flameproof (Ex d) protection. Unlike electrochemical sensors, this IR-based unit is immune to “poisoning” from other chemicals and does not require oxygen to operate, making it extremely reliable in inert atmospheres.
Technical Parameters
| Feature | Specification |
| Detection Principle | Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) |
| Gas Detected | Carbon Dioxide (CO_2) |
| Standard Range | 0–5% Vol. (Other ranges like 0-2000 ppm or 0-100% available) |
| Output Signal | 4–20 mA (3-wire) |
| Power Supply | 24V DC (Typical range 18V to 32V DC) |
| Enclosure Material | Powder-coated Aluminum or Stainless Steel |
| Ingress Protection | IP66 / NEMA 4X |
| Operating Temp | -20°C to +50°C (Standard Industrial) |
| Certification | ATEX, IECEx, SIL 2 (Depending on specific build) |
Product Advantages
- Long-Term Stability: The NDIR sensor technology suffers from very little “drift” compared to electrochemical sensors, reducing the need for frequent recalibration.
- Poison Resistant: Infrared sensors are unaffected by high concentrations of H_2S or other contaminants that typically “kill” other types of sensors.
- Fail-Safe Design: If the IR beam is obscured or the hardware fails, the unit provides a distinct fault signal (e.g., 2mA output), ensuring safety is never compromised.
- Low Maintenance: With no moving parts and a robust optical bench, the cost of ownership over 5–10 years is significantly lower than alternative technologies.
Key Precautions & Notes
- Calibration: While IR sensors are stable, MSA recommends a “Zero” and “Span” calibration check at least every 6 to 12 months using certified calibration gas.
- Condensation: In high-humidity environments, ensure the sensor is fitted with a weather guard or heater to prevent moisture from condensing on the internal optics, which can cause false alarms.
- Mounting Position: CO2 is heavier than air. The sensor should generally be mounted close to the floor (approx. 30–50 cm from the ground) unless there is high-velocity airflow.
- Airtight Seals: When installing in hazardous areas, ensure the cable glands are properly sealed to maintain the flameproof (Ex d) integrity.
Product Applications
- Food & Beverage: Monitoring for leaks in carbonation rooms, breweries, and bottling plants.
- Cold Storage: Safety monitoring in warehouses using CO_2 as a natural refrigerant.
- Laboratories: Ensuring breathable air quality in rooms where CO_2 cylinders are stored or used for incubators.
- Oil & Gas: Monitoring for CO_2 buildup in “Enhanced Oil Recovery” (EOR) sites or during carbon capture and storage (CCS) processes.
- Water Treatment: Monitoring during the pH adjustment process where CO_2 is injected into the water.
