The MVI56-GEC acts as a gateway between the ControlLogix backplane and an Ethernet network. It is specifically designed for “Generic” ASCII communication, meaning it doesn’t use a rigid industry protocol like EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP. Instead, it sends and receives raw ASCII character strings.

The module can operate as both a Client (initiating connections) and a Server (waiting for connections), supporting up to five simultaneous Client and five simultaneous Server connections.

Important Considerations & Precautions

• Configuration: The module requires a configuration file (GEC.CFG) to be downloaded via the serial debug port before it can communicate on the network.

• Networking: Ensure the IP address of the module is on the same subnet as your ASCII devices.

• Data Handling: Since it is “Generic” ASCII, the user must manage the data parsing (stripping headers/terminators like CR or LF) within the ControlLogix ladder logic.

• Power Down: Always turn off the rack power before inserting or removing the module to prevent damage to the backplane or the card.

• Legacy Status: Note that the MVI56-GEC is a legacy product. For new installations, ProSoft often recommends the “Enhanced” version (MVI56E-GEC), which offers web-server diagnostics and easier configuration.
